چکیده

We analyze the K band luminosities of a sample of galactic long-period variables using parallaxes measured by the Hipparcos mission. The parallaxes are in most cases re-computed from the Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data using improved astrometric fits and chromaticity corrections. The K band magnitudes are taken from the literature and from measurements by COBE, and are corrected for interstellar and circumstellar extinction. The sample contains stars of several spectral types: M, S and C, and of several variability classes: Mira, semiregular SRa, and SRb. We find that the distribution of stars in the period-luminosity plane is independent of circumstellar chemistry, but that the different variability types have different P-L distributions. Both the Mira variables and the SRb variables have reasonably well-defined period-luminosity relationships, but with very different slopes. The SRa variables are distributed between the two classes, suggesting that they are a mixture of Miras and SRb, rather than a separate class of stars. Using the flux-weighted mean parallax method, we derive the mean luminosity as a function of period. The Miras show a steeper period-luminosity relationship than found for Large Magellanic Cloud Miras by Feast et al. (1989), although the relationship found here fits the longest-period (P > 400 d) LMC Miras well. The maximum absolute K magnitude of the sample is about −8.2 for both Miras and semi-regular stars, only a little fainter than the expected AGB limit. We show that the stars with the longest periods (P > 400 − 500 d) have high mass loss rates and are almost all Mira variables.

Reprocessing the Hipparcos data for evolved giant stars II. Absolute magnitudes for the R-type carbon stars

The Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data for carbon stars have been reprocessed using an algorithm which provides an objective criterion for rejecting anomalous data points and constrains the parallax to be positive. New parallax solutions have been derived for 317 cool carbon stars, mostly of types R and N. In this paper we discuss the results for the R stars. The most important result is t...

Hi-res Spectroscopy of a Volume-limited Hipparcos Sample within 100 Parsec

We obtain high-resolution echelle spectra of evolved Hipparcos stars within 100 parsec for detailed abundance analysis. We are particularly interested in subgiants because their ages can be derived accurately. Here, we present preliminary results for 10 subgiants and discuss the future work for this project. Our main scientific interest is to incorporate our results to constrain the star format...

Hipparcos Astrometric Orbit and Evolutionary Status of Hr 6046

The previously known, 6-yr spectroscopic binary HR 6046 has been speculated in the past to contain a compact object as the secondary. A recent study has re-determined the orbit with great accuracy, and shown that the companion is an evolved but otherwise normal star of nearly identical mass as the primary, which is also a giant. The binary motion was detected by the Hipparcos mission but was no...

The absolute magnitudes of RR Lyrae stars from HIPPARCOS parallaxes ?

Using the method of “reduced parallaxes” for the Halo RR Lyrae stars in the hipparcos catalogue we derive a zero point of 0.77 ± 0.26 mag for an assumed slope of 0.18 in the MV-[Fe/H] relation. This is 0.28 magnitude brighter than the value Fernley et al. (1998a) derived by employing the method of statistical parallax for the identical sample and using the same slope. We point out that a simila...

Spectroscopic Survey of G and K Dwarfs in the Hipparcos Catalog. I. Comparison between the Hipparcos and Photometric Parallaxes

The tension between the Hipparcos parallax of the Pleiades and other independent distance estimates continues even after the new reduction of the Hipparcos astrometric data and the development of a new geometric distance measurement for the cluster. A short Pleiades distance from the Hipparcos parallax predicts a number of stars in the solar neighborhood that are sub-luminous at a given photosp...
